MapRun courses We have a series of informal orienteering events using the MapRun mobile phone App to be done in your own time. Download the App to your phone, get the access code if one is required and print a paper map if you want one. Then go to the venue in your own time and complete the course. The MapRun App will track your progress and the route you took. Results appear on their server. You can read how to set up and use your mobile phone for MapRun here. Covid-19 continues to impact our sport. Please ensure you follow:
These are unsupervised events so you compete at your own risk. Please let others know where you are going. |

DEE COVID-19 O League Graham Nilsen, Nick Campbell and Jane Mockford have created a series of Virtual Orienteering courses
that you can complete on your own or as a family to help pass the time until we can get back to proper orienteering. These courses are still available for you to do. |

Event 11 - Chicago - The Windy City |
Map 1 Map 2 Question Sheet Planner: Bruce Metz (CAOC) We are delighted to have a guest planner for the next in our Virtual O series. Bruce Metz, member of Chicago Area Orienteering Club has been taking part in our Virtual O Events and has kindly planned a course on his home turf for us to enjoy. Bruce's top tip is to use the Chicago overhead railroad (known locally as the "EL"), mapped with the railway line in blue, as a catching feature. Thanks to Bruce and enjoy your North American orienteering experience. |

Event 10 - Bilbao |

Event 9 - Bruges |
Map Control Descriptions Question Sheet Planner: Jean Payne Controller: Jane Mockford They recommend that, like Chester last week, it is well worth going round the whole course on street view. If you aren't familiar with Bruges, it will give you a real flavour of the city. [Does that mean waffles and chips? Ed.] |
|
Event 8 - Chester |
Map part 1 be patient while it loads Map part 2 likewise. This part was originally an A3 map, but it's shown here as 2-and-a-bit A4 maps so you can print it on A4. Question Sheet Graham Nilsen has planned a scenic tour of Chester city centre for you We strongly recommend that you do this event entirely on street view ie do not just drop in on the control sites. If you do the latter, you will miss the famous Chester walls, rows and other features. It is worth taking the route along the city walls from 12-13 (see special symbol on the maps) and following the Shropshire Union canal for a while from 13-14. You can cool down after the finish by following the road from the finish west to The Groves to enjoy the river DEE, the suspension bridge (the 1922 bridge replaced the original 1852 bridge) and the Old Dee bridge which dates from the 1350s although there was a crossing there from Roman times. There is a further bridge across the Dee in Chester (not on this map) opened in 1833. When completed, it was the longest single-span arch bridge in the world - a title that it retained for 30 years. |
|
Event 7 - Venice | Map Question Sheet We've splashed out on this one. International travel - no problemo. |
|
Event 6 - Halifax | Map Question Sheet Control Descriptions This week's planner is Steve Ingleby and we are grateful to Jean Lochhead at East Pennine Orienteering Club for getting permission for us to use their club's map. Some DEEsiders went to this event so it will be interesting to see how well you get on...... |
|
Event 5 - Coventry | Map Question Sheet We are heading for Coventry thanks to DEE's Jean Payne for planning and to mapper Bruce Bryant of Octavian Droobers for permission to use his map. The event was just last year so, if you went, you may find it interesting to try a different course or you can see if you remember how you tackled the trickier controls. In planning and controlling the course, Jean and I fell foul of the multiple versions of Street View again. Hence you will note that the questions sheets sometimes tell you which version you need to be on to find the answer. Also please be aware that if the question says "near the control circle", the object may be some distance away. |
