The area north of Lifeboat Road seemed ideal for the schools relays having a both a good path system for the easier courses and more technical areas for the harder. The area used was small which, for the longest course Light Green, involved returning nearly back to the start before returning to the woods. To make the event more interesting for the spectators I made this control clearly visible on the top of the hill. Unfortunately several competitors realised that by missing this control until near the end of the course would give them a big advantage.
Taking the controls out of order on a course is cheating and should result in disqualification. Several competitors that I spoke to claimed that they did not know this believing that they could visit the controls in any order they wished. As planner the answer would have been to make the control on the hill ‘manned’ so that each runner on arriving at that control would have their card checked by an official to make sure that they were visiting the controls in the correct order. As the control was so visible I had not expected anyone to cheat in this way. It means that if you saw anyone going to the top of the hill after they had visited the penultimate control on the fence corner of the lake was probably cheating.
