Organisers Comments (Sheila Hills)

It would have made life a lot easier if all schools had entered by the deadline of 8pm on Thursday as they were supposed to do, and had turned up by the time they said they would.

Thanks to Forest Enterprises for the use of Delamere forest. Thanks also to Barbara Jones for once again doing enquiries and generally being helpful; John Sherwood; Noel Schorah and his two children, David & Bethany; John & Carol Evans; Anne & Stephen Hurrell; Keith Harrison-Smith; Pat & Brian Spoonley; Barry Chambers; Jenny Beasant; Sue Sinclair; Mike Vokes and his son Matthew; Rick Hughes and his son Jonathon; Peter Edwards and Claire Crocker – who volunteered on the day; and the many un-named willing helpers who carried equipment back to the carpark at the end.

Everyone did a magnificent job under great pressure since instead of the usual 70 – 100 participants at a schools event there were something in the order of 250. At 6.30pm on Friday I had only 124 pre-entered, including 2 colleges. There’s something about Delamere that brings everyone out of the woodwork! Registration had a particularly hard job because various groups did not turn up in time for their allocated run and had to be re-scheduled! Thank you again for coping so well and enabling the event to go relatively smoothly.

Planner’s Comments (Peter Hills)

When planning technical courses, I have two objectives. Firstly, not being a runner, I believe orienteering is more about navigation, so I try to keep competitors off the paths as far as possible. Secondly, I like to use as few controls as possible. Not only does this reduce the effort in putting them out, but it also, hopefully, gives longer legs to test navigation skills. The large network of paths in Delamere restricts this latter aim to some extent, but I managed to use only 26 controls for the five courses.

When I put the first half of the controls out on Friday morning the weather was foul, and I was not looking forward to spending all Saturday morning standing around in the rain. However, luckily, on the Saturday, apart from a brief shower at about 10.30, the weather turned out fine. I hope you enjoyed your runs.

The only real problem that was brought to my attention as planner was a query over the placing of control 4 on the green course, a small depression. It is true that there are more depression-like features on the ground than shown on the map we were using. The map used for the badge event two weeks earlier does show more, but even they do not seem to correspond completely with what is there. Moreover, there was some evidence, in the form of tape, that some previous planner thought a dip near to the one I used was the mapped feature. All I can say is that of those I talked to after the event, the majority seemed to agree that I had placed the control on the mapped feature, but a few people disputed this. If you felt this spoilt your run, I can only apologise.

Due to a mix-up in organisation, no controller was appointed for this event. My thanks to Steve Ingleby for looking over the planned courses on paper, and suggesting that I made the Orange a little harder than my first version.

Reminder

  1. Please ensure the control card is filled in correctly. That means full name, first and second name, your class, e.g. B or G, Y8 etc. and the school name. Failure to fill in the control card properly may result in you and your school missing points!
  2. The Deeside web site now has a section especially for the school’s league that includes fixtures, results, rules and photos. We hope to develop it further with news and other items. If you have any ideas or suggestions please contact Malcolm Irvine on 0151 648 7201.
