I hope everyone enjoyed their day out at Bickerton. Unfortunately the map of the area is very out of date now. We also found that a lot of the area was unusable due to the horrendous bracken - especially on the steep slopes. These restrictions meant that the courses looked very similar to those Jon Hateley planned last year - but at least I hope we took you around the controls in the opposite direction!
Well done to all the Deeside Champions - some very fast times were achieved and the Smithard Family achieved an outstanding result with Mike, Pauline, Chris and Zoe all winning their categories (or rather in Chris' case he ran up in the Senior Men class and beat everyone there!). Unfortunately for them they forgot that winning the Deeside Champs one year puts you in prime spot for being asked to Plan and Organise the following year - this means that we will have at least 4 new Champions at the next competition!
An event like this one could not take place without willing help from a number of stalwart volunteers. In particular I would like to pay tribute to the sterling work of Jill Barnes and Jenny Beasant and their 'kitchen helpers' who managed to russle up a veritable feast for competitors after completing their runs. Kate and I volunteered to 'do' this year's event only on the basis that Jill would not take on the catering task again - but despite this agreement, Jill somehow managed to get back into the job. I'm also grateful to Tim Palmer for once again taking on the role of SI system coordinator and helping me to get to grips with programming the electronic control boxes. Tim's sound advice meant that despite 4 control boxes failing on the morning of the event, enough spares were available as back-up so that the competition was not disrupted.
Thank you all for coming and we look forward to seeing you all at the 2006 championships - although I'm not sure which area will be used for the event next time.
