Organiser's Comments - John Padget

It is with much relief that the event finally took place because it has been three years in the making. The area was last held in the 1980s when permissions became too complex and difficult. However Deeside have a dearth of decent areas and so I decided to try to resurrect the area by trying to unravel the ownership and permission issues. The purchase of Snidley Moor and Woodhouse Hill by the Woodland Trust was very helpful, but the designation of Dunsdale Hollow as a SSSI was not. Eventually I became confident enough in getting sufficient permissions to justify re-mapping the area. We decided to go ahead with an event once English Nature had kindly given approval to the use (for one event) of the SSSI , only to be thwarted by Foot and Mouth. I hope you enjoyed your courses to make all the efforts worth while. Andrew's courses made good use of the area whilst avoiding some of the excessive climbing of some past events.
Thanks to the many Deeside helpers on a cold day, and especially to Steve Ingleby who helped to compile the results following the failure of the finish timer to print out . Planner's Comments - Andrew Tarr

This event has been a heavy dose of nostalgia. You may have spotted that I have contributed to several previous maps of Frodsham Hill. It was the site of my first event, on a black-and-white OS photocopy, on the same day as my daughter's christening in 1970. I also recall an Informal Boxing Day event in 1974 in a 40mph gale - there were 5 helpers, 3 courses and 130 entries; this time lots, 6 and 260. I therefore welcomed the opportunity to return to Frodsham for the first time since January 1989, especially as a new route choice has become available with the addition of the newly-planted fields at the south end. Normal planning conventions do not apply at Frodsham, as the severe slopes cannot be used - in winter they are greasy and in summer overgrown. The north-most third has little orienteering potential but has to be used in a Blue course. Fortunately the remainder is semi-runnable and offers a fair range of technical difficulty. I believe most of you enjoyed your courses, so I am happy. Many thanks to John for organising, and for the months of effort he invested in getting access permissions; to Mike Greenwood of MDOC for controlling; and to Malcolm McIvor for collecting half the controls.
