Delamere Fun Run, 9 March 2002
Organised by Deeside Orienteering Club on behalf of the Forestry Commission
The 22nd running of this free non-competitive event was notable for the appalling weather and the brief elation of runners who thought they had covered the first five miles in record times. Brief, because they soon learnt that the whole field had taken a wrong turn shortly after the start and lopped over a mile off the course - following, apparently, an innocent jogger out for a quiet run on his own! Only the last finisher, who started seven minutes late, avoided this mistake and completed the full 10 miles.
Gale force winds, sleet and a severe weather warning did not deter 243 runners from starting. The field included 72 ladies and 10 juniors, and contained many faces familiar to Delamere from their regular appearance in the annual Sandstone Trail Races (also organised by Deeside OC and taking place this year on 6 October.) Happily, most of the runners finished the course during a brief spell of sunshine and appeared to have enjoyed their afternoon in the Forest.
Thanks are due to the Forestry Commission and Cheshire County Council staff for their assistance in preparing for the event and for help on the day. Cheshire Radio Scouts provided invaluable assistance in marshalling the course along with members of Deeside OC. The event would not be possible without the financial support of South Cheshire Health Authority.
Charity donations on the day raised £111.
See you all again next year, when the weather will be better - after all, it can hardly be much worse!
