CLUB CHAMPS 2001
Pettypool 9th December

103 Dee runners at the Pettypool event is quite impressive. I hope the Club Champs was one of the major attractions.

First of all, big apologies are due. I goofed up on the calculations and managed to ignore the two Padgets, who were clearly 2nd and 3rd Senior Men. Sorry Stuart and Graham … my only defence is that maths isn't easy when you're semi-hypothermic and operating on an empty stomach! I hope David and Paul won't be too offended when I wrench their trophies away from them … I think free runs are in order for them next year.

A few people were missed off the results because of retiring, miss-punching or not putting down their age-class. This had a significant impact on the Ladies categories, as I had the unenviable task of having to guess Kate Ingleby's age! Too young and she missed out on a trophy, too old and I get thumped! I wimped out in the end and scrubbed her from the results completely. Fortunately Kate was very understanding and appeared to be satisfied that her husband had acquired (yet another) prize.

Otherwise the event and format seemed to be a great success (well, the Crockers and Findlay-Robinsons must think so). Competition was very close in the Senior and Veteran Categories and there was a good mixture of age-classes and courses represented. There was also some tactical running going on which paid off for some (e.g. Maggie Hateley … her idea, not mine!) but not for others (e.g. Andrew Irvine). I think we may stick to this format next year as it is much easier to organise. If you have any ideas how to tweak it … please let me know.

Finally, a big thank you to Jill and Barry Barnes + John Hammond for organising the social and trophies. Also Huw Lewis and Pete Sleigh for collecting in the controls whilst I added up the numbers all wrong! I thought it was a great occasion and venue, particularly after freezing in that field. See you next year!
